IDEA Sets the Pace on Gender at the UN and WMD

IDEA participated in a UN Expert Meeting on ‘Enhancing Women’s Participation in Electoral Processes in Post-Conflict Countries’ (final report) convened by the Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women and the Department of Political Affairs. The meeting, held in New York from 20–22 January 2004, aimed to review what has been done to support women in all areas of the electoral process, including special measures that have been adopted to facilitate the election of women to decision-making bodies, and the establishment of constitutional and legal frameworks. IDEA provided papers on specific aspects of elections in post-conflict states that may hinder female participation, and on political parties and special measures, including electoral quotas that have been implemented to facilitate the entry of women into the political sphere.

The World Movement for Democracy (WMD) convened on 1-4 February 2004 in Durban, South Africa, its Third Assembly on the theme ‘Building Democracy for Peace, Development and Human Rights’. More than 600 democracy activists, practitioners, and scholars from more than 100 countries in every region of the world, including Belarus, Burma, China, Colombia, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Liberia, Mongolia, Serbia and Venezuela discussed practical solutions to democracy challenges. IDEA contributed with a presentation on 'Strengthening Internal Political Party Democracy: Candidate Recruitment from a Gender Perspective' at the workshop on How to Strengthen Internal Party Democracy?, organized by the Electoral Institute of Southern Africa (EISA) and Netherlands Institute of Multi-Party Democracy (NIMD).
