New Chairman of the Board
Former Norwegian Foreign Minister Thorvald Stoltenberg was elected
as the new Chairman of the Board of International IDEA. He succeeds
Sir Shridath Ramphal, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth
and Co-Chairman of the Commission on Global Governance in the position.
New Board members
In June 2001, four new Board members joined International IDEA:
Mr Thomas Carothers, (USA) Vice President for Studies, Carnegie
Endowment for International Peace, Ambassador Legwaila Joseph Manson
John Legwaila, (Botswana) Special Representative for the United
Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), Dr Henning Scherf,
President of the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, and Mr
Jos van Gennip, Member of the Upper House of the Netherlands'
Parliament.
The following members of the Board completed their terms of office in
June 2001:
Sir Shridath Ramphal (Chairman), former Secretary-General of
the Commonwealth and Co-Chairman of the Commission on Global Governance,
Dr Adama Dieng, Registrar of the International Criminal Tribunal
for Rwanda; former Secretary-General of the International Commission
of Jurists, Sir David Steel, Presiding Officer, Scottish Parliament
and former President of Liberal International, UK, and Dr Erling
Olsen, former speaker of Parliament, Denmark. Dr Olsen has left
the Board in order to assume duties as Deputy Secretary-General of International
IDEA
Paul Risley (USA), joined the Institute in September 2001 as Senior
Information Officer (Information Division)
