International IDEA (International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance) was founded in February 1995. The Institute's overall objective is to promote and advance sustainable democracy worldwide and to improve and consolidate electoral processes.

To date, there are 19 member states: Australia, Barbados, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, India, Mauritius, Namibia, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and Uruguay. There are currently four associate members: International Press Institute, Parliamentarians for Global Action, the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, and Transparency International. International IDEA has also formal agreements and co-operates closely with Switzerland, International Commission of Jurists, Inter-Parliamentary Union, the United Nations Development Programme, the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Organisation of the Francophonie, The Electoral Assistance Division of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs, the Costa Rica-based University for Peace, and the International Union of Local Authorities.
