International IDEA Launches Democracy Forum 2001 Website Middle of December
What are the implications of the IT revolution for democracy and its core
values? Will it, as some fear, heighten existing divisions of power and access
within and between countries, or, as others predict, serve
as a powerful tool for reducing those inequalities? And what are the opportunities
- and threats - of rapid information flow and access for democratic governance?
These and other key political, social and economic issues raised by the IT revolution
will be examined in detail at the International IDEA Democracy Forum 2001 - Democracy
and the Information Revolution: Values, Opportunities and Threats to be held
in Stockholm 27-29 June 2001. Thus, the process through which the information
is shared is one of underlying issues - the method is the message. Keeping this
in mind, the Democracy Forum 2001 website will not only be informative, but also
demonstrative. In this manner, interested parties may experience the issues through
a wide variety of new media tools. The website will function as the communicative
junction between all individuals, organizations, and member-states participating
in the Democracy Forum 2001. The official launch will occur in the middle of December.
