International IDEA's Work - Conflict Management
Democracy and Reconciliation

The core activity of this project is the Handbook: Democracy and Reconciliation After Violent Conflict. The Handbook provides practical and pragmatic advice urgently needed by politicians and policy-makers facing the challenge of constructing and sustaining a shared democratic future for a society divided by a violent past.

Another parallel objective of the project is to make available the expertise contained in, and generated by, the network of writers involved in the project to specific contexts. This will be done in conjunction with International IDEA's Field Division, and will involve facilitating general information exchanges, design workshops and/or inputs of specific technical knowledge. Activities have included a reconciliation workshop in the Balkan region, and an international seminar on 'Truth Commissions and Reconciliation' in Lima, Peru, in co-operation with the Chilean and Peruvian governments.
