What’s So Great About Democracy?
The Young Speak Up!

Is democracy relevant for tomorrow? Are democratic practices uninviting to young people or are young people’s interests evolving away from the traditional democratic structures? Today young people in consolidated democracies appear to be increasingly disinterested in formal political processes.

At the same time, in many other parts of the world, young people are at the forefront of campaigns for democratic change, often taking huge personal risks in struggles against authoritarian rule. For them, democracy seems clearly the answer to many of their concerns. What is the significance of democracy for tomorrow’s world?

The 1999 Democracy Forum aims to be a meeting place for young people from around the world, from both established democracies and countries where there is no democratic government. The Forum aims are to explore the paradox set out above and to discuss the role of democracy in all its various contexts. As an organization committed to furthering democracy, we hope the input from this year’s participants will inform our future programmes, and increase their relevance to the concerns and needs of a younger generation. We also hope the Forum will generate specific new ideas and new networks for our various projects.
